Reports on China: Why hasn't China's Macau had the same violence as Hong Kong?

Today is the 25th anniversary of Macau returning to Chinese administration, after more than 400 years being managed by Portugal.

In 1999, the small island area of just 33 square kilometers returned to the Chinese mainland as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, meaning it is part of the People's Republic of China while retaining its own system of governance and law.

Hong Kong is China's other SAR, but their stories are completely different, with Macau's return to China completely smooth and not at all controversial.

Macau hasn't witnessed any of the violence and upheavals Hong Kong has been through.

Why?

I visited Macau recently and interviewed six locals, from politicians to journalists, to find out more.
