ChipCrunch: Yanis Varoufakis EXPLAINS How China Is Silently Defeating the U.S.

A new Cold War is unfolding, with China at its center, driven by escalating U.S. economic restrictions. Beginning under Donald Trump and intensified by Joe Biden, bans on advanced microchips aim to curb China’s tech ascent. In response, China has advanced “cloud capital” through platforms like WeChat, challenging U.S. control over global payments.

This digital finance innovation, paired with China's push for a sovereign digital currency, threatens the dollar's dominance. As U.S. deficits widen, the power struggle over technological and financial systems marks a pivotal shift in global influence.

“A mixture of stupidity and nastiness… The liberal establishment is primarily responsible for the genocide of the Palestinians.”

This episode explores the facade of Western moral superiority, the role of empire past and present, how liberal hypocrisy has given rise to fascism, the climate crisis, Gaza and why Varoufakis places his hope in the Global South.

Democracy Now!: "Frenzy of Warmongering": Critics of Munich Security Summit Warn of Musk, Rising Fascism in Europe

As the annual high-level Munich Security Conference gets underway, the Russia-Ukraine war is dominating the agenda, and we speak to two guests protesting the conference. Economist, progressive leader and former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis says the European project started with a noble goal of promoting peace but finds itself today "cornered" between Russian and NATO militarism. "Europe has been caught in a frenzy of warmongering," says Varoufakis.

We also speak with German lawyer Melanie Schweizer, who was suspended from her job at the German Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs after being doxxed in an article published in the German tabloid _Bild_, owned by media giant Axel Springer SE, for her pro-Palestinian online statements. She is running for German parliament with the progressive party MERA25 in this month's elections and warns the country's political establishment is increasingly adopting the rhetoric and policies of the far right. "We see fascism playing out in real time, and it's getting worse by the day," says Schweizer.

The World Bank and IMF are in crisis. It's time to push a radical new vision | | The Guardian

Jim Yong Kim was once a fierce critic of the Washington consensus. In his book Dying for Growth, published in 2000, Kim railed against the World Bank’s free marketeering, the costs of which “have been borne by the poor, the infirm and the vulnerable in poor countries that accepted the experts’ designs”.

Yet as president, Kim turbocharged the bank’s commitment to private profits against the public interest. “Maximizing finance for development” (MFD), the strategy he adopted in 2015, transformed the World Bank from a direct investor in developing countries to a mere facilitator of private finance. The bank’s core activity would not be lending to governments, but to “de-risk projects, sectors and entire countries”, in effect socializing the risks on behalf of the private investors and privatizing any gains.

From this perspective, it makes perfect sense that Mr Kim resigned early to take up a post at … a private equity firm.

His decision must, however, be our cue to review the role of the World Bank and the IMF today, and perhaps to revisit Keynes’s prescient idea circa 1944.

The world today needs, as much as it did in 1944, a massive international investment program. Back then, humanity needed reconstruction after a lethal world war. Today, the planet is crying out for a green transition that will cost at least $8tn annually.

Where will the money come from? Surely not from the stressed budgets of our states.

If Trump wants to blow up the world order, who will stop him? || Yanis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis (The Guardian) - As horrified as we may be at Trump’s uncouth antics, it is important to understand the tectonic shifts underpinning them

...

Armed with the exorbitant privilege that owning the dollar presses affords him, Trump then takes a look at the trade flows with the rest of the G7 and comes to an inescapable conclusion: he cannot possibly lose a trade war against countries that have such high surpluses with the US (eg Germany, Italy, China), or which (like Canada) will catch pneumonia the moment the American economy catches the common cold.
None of this is new. Richard Nixon also confronted Europe’s establishment in 1971 while Ronald Reagan brutally squeezed the Japanese in 1985. Even the language was not less uncivilised – recall the summary of the Nixon administration’s attitude in the inimitable words of John Connally: “My philosophy is that all foreigners are out to screw us, and it’s our job to screw them first.” Today’s US aggression toward its allies is distinguished from those episodes in two ways.

...

Can the EU create a “Europe First” anti-Trump alliance, perhaps involving China? The answer has been given already, following Trump’s annulment of the Iran nuclear deal. Within minutes of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statement that European companies would stay in Iran, every single German corporation announced it was pulling out, prioritising the fat tax cuts Trump was offering them within the United States.
