With the discovery of natural laws and the application of cause and effect, a new paradigm developed: truth had to be proved; authority had to be earned. Modern minds accepted the new paradigm. Premodern minds refused to change, clinging to the Old Order. To maintain control, leaders knew they had to maintain their monopoly on Authority. Many today continue to follow those Old Orders, either due to indoctrination from a young age or natural inclination.
