Food For Thought : Dunning–Kruger Effect || From the Vault

I learned this by observation, when people respect you they ask for your opinion, when they do not respect you they work on making you bow to theirs.

Today Food For Thought is Illusion Of superiority.
Paul Krugman’s Do You Know Who I Am?:

… academic credentials are neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for having your ideas taken seriously. If a famous professor repeatedly says stupid things, then tries to claim he never said them, there’s no rule against calling him a mendacious idiot …

Conversely, if someone without formal credentials consistently makes trenchant, insightful observations, he or she has earned the right to be taken seriously, regardless of background.

Eric’s contribution:

It's pretty basic, really. Up until the 16th Century and the Age of Enlightenment/Reason/Science, all knowledge was revealed Truth from God, revealed by those with Authority. With the discovery of natural laws and the application of cause and effect, a new paradigm developed: truth had to be proved; authority had to be earned. Modern minds accepted the new paradigm. Premodern minds refused to change, clinging to the Old Order. To maintain control, leaders knew they had to maintain their monopoly on Authority. Many today continue to follow those Old Orders, either due to indoctrination from a young age or natural inclination.

The great abolitionist and feminist, Lucrecia Mott summed it up best:
"Truth for Authority, not Authority for Truth."
You earn authority by speaking truth, rather than accepting truth just because it is spoken by authority.

Food 4 Thought || George Orwell

“Being in a minority, even in a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.”

…

“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

Food For Thought || Karl Popper, Mark Twain

“The more we learn about the world, and the deeper our learning, the more conscious, specific, and articulate will be our knowledge of what we do not know, our knowledge of our ignorance. For this, indeed, is the main source of our ignorance — the fact that our knowledge can be only finite, while our ignorance must necessarily be infinite.”

Identity

I find that people who regularly remind you who and what they are ( ” I’m an artist” , “I’m a grown man “, ” I’m a really nice person” ) are often the same people who’s actions don’t coincide with that identity.

Food For Thought - A Bozo

Eric Jackson:

…

A bozo is someone who thinks they are much smarter and capable than they actually are. They constantly over-estimate their abilities and under-estimate the risks and threats around them. They typically don’t keep an open-mind. They look instead for data that confirms a previously held bias. …

via DaringFireball

I’ll add that a bozo fears demonstrating that he/she doesn’t know, even the most trivial of things. Because for a bozo, any information, any data gathered = intelligence.
But as Einstein demonstrated - Imagination is more important than knowledge. Which means imagination leads to/is the road to knowledge.

One thing positive about bozos is that they strip off their mask around people they think are below ( i mean literally ) them. And that’s a threshold i like to explore.
If you care deeply about human condition, a bozo is a great subject of study.

Any human being is a complexity in constant flux, so do not pin them down as they do you.

Being myself an African ( you know what i mean ), born and raise, makes me a magnet for them to shine.
… And i like it.

Food For Thought

cletus22 ( just scroll down ):

…

That poor and disadvantaged people and their children are less deserving of adequate employment, health care and education than the wealthy because the wealthy have worked really, really hard to acquire their wealth and that this somehow entitles them to prevent the poor and disadvantaged from getting adequate employment, health care and education. All so the wealthy can acquire more and more and more wealth.

Why aren't we smashing this argument?

The same argument which has been given for free, and without even a slight "brouhaha" ( from the so called Left ) in the Portuguese media as meritocracy.

Jeremiah Moses’s All created Equal? a Sinister Doctrine!:

Laissez faire ideology breeds hostility to public schools, public health and all forms of public welfare, including social security, and even the Post Office. Laissez faire finds its justification in the egalitarian myth that all persons are born on an equal footing. The lamb and the tiger are (if I may steal William Blake's metaphors) are created equal, and if the lamb fails to get one up on the tiger, it is simply because she did not put her mind to it.
