Why is a Tanzanian chief's skull mentioned in the Versailles Treaty? || BBC



The Treaty of Versailles, signed exactly a century ago, reshaped Europe in the wake of World War One. So why, within its many hundreds of clauses, does the treaty refer to the decapitated head of an African anti-colonial hero?


The skull was used as a symbol to intimidate the Wahehe people, who the chief had led in a fierce rebellion against the German colonisers.
So successful was his campaign in the 1890s that a bounty was put on his head by the Germans. He is believed to have eventually taken his own life in 1898, rather than submit to the humiliation of being captured, as he sheltered in a cave that was encircled by German soldiers.
Two decades later, the fate of his skull was on the minds of the diplomats who spent months arguing over the settlement of World War One.

Dar es Salaam city is the commercial capital of Tanzania. It is located on the eastern part of the country, and with a population of 4 364 541 (official 2012 census), is the largest city in East Africa. Administratively, Dar es Salaam consists of five urban districts, namely: Ilala, Temeke, Kinondoni, Ubungo, and Kigamboni. The CBD is located in Ilala.

CARAMELIZED ONION CHICKEN
Ingredients

1 Full cut chicken ( I used 3.5 lb - 1.5 kgs)
3 large onions 1.5 lb /680gms
1 Tbl cumin seeds
1 tsp cumin powder
1 Tbl peppercorns
1 tsp ground peppercorn
6 cloves fresh garlic
1 thumb size fresh ginger
1. 5 tsp kosher salt
1 Tbls ghee/clarified butter
1.5 Tbl canola oil







COCONUT FISH CURRY
Ingredients

1.5 lb/1 kg king fish steak or any type
1 Tbls Cooking/veg oil
¼ tsp turmeric powder
Salt taste
1 tsp chili powder
Lemon/lime

1 medium size onion chopped
1 Tbl fresh ginger and garlic paste
3 medium size tomatoes ( diced )
1 Tbls tomato paste
2 green chilies ( optional)
1 tbl curry powder of your choice
1 tps Fish sauce (optinal)
Chumvi kiasi
1 can coconut milk ( add water if needed)
Lemo/lime







RICH FRUIT CAKE WITHOUT ALCOHOL
Ingredients

2 cups/260 gm All purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon powder
½ tsp cardamom powder
½ tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ginger powder
¼ tsp clove powder
¼ tsp star anise powder
1 cup/200 gms granulated sugar ( for the batter )
1 cup butter (2 sticks) 227gms
1 tbs orange zest
1 tbl lemon zest
1 tsp grated ginger
2 tsp vanilla
3 Eggs

Dry fruits:
½ cup pitted dates
½ cup black raisins
¼ cup golden raisins
¼ cup cranberries

Nuts:
¼ cup cashew nuts (chopped)
¼ cup almonds ( chopped)
¼ Cup candid ginger/pineapple , orange etc.
(optional)

Burnt syrup

1 cup sugar
1 cup orange juice/pine apple/ grape juice or water
3 whole cardamom, 3 cloves, 1 stick cinnamon, 1 star anise , vanilla bean
