Head of an Ife King (Nigeria)

Noticed HOW Egypt is not considered Africa?
AH AH!

It is funny how the input of Africans is ignored by racists Europeans, even when it is about African culture.
That is the behavior you get from racists when their illusion of superiority is shattered, I notice it among the most illiterate (some teachers, among some other racists still on the biz of convincing their European pupils/employees that they are superior to me, all to fix their egos) up to a Ph.D. supervisor. I have even met Jehovah witness members whom I never fucked who behave like they are intimate with my cock.

ATTIEKE (GARI)
Attiéké is a dish made from Cassava that is a part of the cuisine of Côte d'Ivoire in West Africa. The dish is prepared from fermented grated Cassava.

This recipe uses Gari which is fermented, grated and fried Cassava and as such it’s a creative recipe. I’ve included natural Yoghurt to this recipe to mimic the slight sour taste of the traditional Attieke mixture.

Best to add some Olive oil to the steamed Gari for a depth of flavour. Alternatively you can purchase Attieke online or from specialist African Grocers.

Between gods and animals: becoming human in the Gilgamesh epic || Sophus Helle

By Sophus Helle

The Epic of Gilgamesh is a Babylonian poem composed in ancient Iraq, millennia before Homer. It tells the story of Gilgamesh, king of the city of Uruk. To curb his restless and destructive energy, the gods create a friend for him, Enkidu, who grows up among the animals of the steppe. When Gilgamesh hears about this wild man, he orders that a woman named Shamhat be brought out to find him. Shamhat seduces Enkidu, and the two make love for six days and seven nights, transforming Enkidu from beast to man. His strength is diminished, but his intellect is expanded, and he becomes able to think and speak like a human being.

...

What does this tell us? We learn two main things. First, that humanity for the Babylonians was defined through society. To be human was a distinctly social affair. And not just any kind of society: it was the social life of cities that made you a ‘true man’. Babylonian culture was, at heart, an urban culture. Cities such as Uruk, Babylon or Ur were the building blocks of civilisation, and the world outside the city walls was seen as a dangerous and uncultured wasteland.
Second, we learn that humanity is a sliding scale. After a week of sex, Enkidu has not become fully human. There is an intermediary stage, where he speaks like a human but thinks like an animal. Even after the second week, he still has to learn how to eat bread, drink beer and put on clothes. In short, becoming human is a step-by-step process, not an either/or binary.
In her second invitation to Uruk, Shamhat says: ‘I look at you, Enkidu, you are like a god, why with the animals do you range through the wild?’ Gods are here depicted as the opposite of animals, they are omnipotent and immortal, whereas animals are oblivious and destined to die. To be human is to be placed somewhere in the middle: not omnipotent, but capable of skilled labour; not immortal, but aware of one’s mortality.
In short, the new fragment reveals a vision of humanity as a process of maturation that unfolds between the animal and the divine. One is not simply born human: to be human, for the ancient Babylonians, involved finding a place for oneself within a wider field defined by society, gods and the animal world.

Racial Profiling || When The Stupid Claim Superiority

As long there are stupid people around …
Tell lies, insult a dark skinned, you get a rise.
Some things never change.

Racists are insecure.

Do you think Mickey Mouse was based off of blackface?

devotedtodiversityinart:

Short answer: Yes

Long media studies answer: Yes, and it’s not really a matter of opinion so much as fact, lol.
As many cultural historians have pointed out, the classic American animated cartoons emerged from the same milieu that produced blackface performances (like the Amos and Andy show) and minstrel music. Many of the great early animated characters — Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, Bosko — had more than a touch of blackface and the minstrel show to them.
Source <- (a good 101 read on the subject)
To some degree, most introductory cartoons from the 1920s/30s drew from vaudeville -Blackface and minstrel aesthetic included- when it came to both character design and content. And by most, I mean Disney, Warner Brothers (Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes), MGM, and R.K.O.
The influence lasted well into the 1950’s for most, too.

Although Disney was still hitting us with that Jungle Book/King Louie/I wanna be like you racism well into the 1960’s, but I digress.
((If you’re looking for a 1920s cartoon character/mascot that was most definitely hella omgwtf based on Vaudvillian blackface acts, check out the original design for Warner Brothers’ character Bosko.
Not the cute retcon’d Tiny Toons version; the original—

The image doesn’t do Bosko and Honey justice though. You can watch The Talk Ink Kid for animated confirmation. There’s even a really racist Asian-stereotype moment! Wowzers.))
Longer media studies answer with bonus content:
So that’s in terms of design.
In terms of content, the studios of that time did some hella racist stuff—shoutout bugs bunny—and Disney/Mickey Mouse was no exception.
Our dear mouse-pal has straight up appeared in blackface—
Source: Mickey’s Mellerdrammer
image
Depicted extremely shitty caricatures of Africans—

Source: Trader Mickey
(note the cab calloway sounding music around that 4:40 mark~).
And the Disney comic books are much of the same—

"Voodoo Hoodoo" - 1949

"Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse Annual: A Black Outlook" -1932

So it was the whole shebang, really.
Of course, over time the studios have delivered some major character design overhauls and mostly stepped away from those origins.
